The Great Smoky Mountains are among the most visited national parks in the United States, and it’s no wonder why. With breathtaking mountain vistas, endless trails, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, the Smokies draw millions of visitors each year. Whether you’re planning your first trip or returning for another adventure, you probably have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the Great Smoky Mountains.

While you can enjoy a day trip, 2–3 days is a good amount of time to see highlights like Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome, and at least one waterfall hike. If you have a week, you can dive deeper into the backcountry trails and hidden gems.
Pets are welcome in certain areas like campgrounds, picnic spots, and a few short trails (such as Gatlinburg and Oconaluftee River Trails). However, they are not allowed on most backcountry hiking trails. Keep them leashed at all times.
This makes the Smokies a drivable destination for many families and groups.
