Built between 1819 and 1833, Fort Morgan is a masonry fort of the Third System. The fort was a key player in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico. The location, which was used sporadically during the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, shows how American seacoast fortifications have changed over time.
